Boorloo based artist Luisa Hansal uses a painting practice that she compares to osmosis — gradually and unconsciously absorbing feelings and ideas from daily life outside the studio as a means of soul searching and constructing an inner dialogue of personally codified colours, symbols and forms. She employs intuition and improvisation to develop abstract compositions until eventually an internal logic unfolds that allows for rumination on knotty emotions, beliefs and other self-knowledge. Portals, archways, disembodied hands and feet, moon phases, moths, shells, hearts, and five-petaled flowers are cues that reflect personal moments of trauma, loss, resilience and relief. By engaging in a wordless discussion between gesture, material, and feeling, Hansal is able to give form to intangible experiences as they shift from hidden to felt.
